Dancers enjoy themselves at the Christiansburg Sapphire Ballroom during a swing lesson.
Sapphire Ballroom on Main Street in Christiansburg teams with Mountain Lake Lodge for a weekend devoted to swing dancing, music, and dance styles from the 40s to today. The event begins with a Friday evening Welcome Champagne & Cheese Social in Stony Creek Tavern followed by a full weekend of dance lessons and dance party.
Sapphire Ballroom has been working with Mountain Lake on various dance-related events for over ten years.
“We started in 2006 with the 20th anniversary of the release of [the movie] Dirty Dancing. This is the first time we have teamed up with Mountain Lake for an entirely Swing weekend, but we’ve been The Dirty Dancing Weekends at Mountain Lake have been going strong ever since, sometimes selling out at over 200 participants,” Debbi Richey, an instructor at the school said.
At those weekends, the Christiansburg dance school teaches group classes and private lessons in the afternoon followed by an evening dance party.
“We give a short performance, then dance the night away with the Lodge guests,” she said.
The school also teaches at Country Girls’ Night Out and the most recent versions of the Mountain Lake Oktoberfest.
