As they will again this year, Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Color Guard present the colors at the historic Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church in 2011 NAACP Veteran’s Day ceremonies.

The Montgomery County-Radford City-Floyd County NAACP Youth Council International Dinner will be held this afternoon, Nov. 11, at 4 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church (500 Stuart Street) in Christiansburg.

Youth NAACP International dinners have been held every year for the past 10 years.

“We teach the children through this event about inclusion and diversity and why it’s important to embrace diversity and respect and appreciate people of different cultures and customs,” Debbie Travis, Co-Advisor of the MRF NAACP Youth Council said.

The children, age 5 to 18, select a country that they would like to talk about and bring a dish to share that represents that country.

“Not only does this event teach them about diversity, but also helps them to learn how to research and to speak in front of a group. Needless to say, the various foods are enjoyed by all!” she said.

All are welcome.

Following Saturday’s Youth Dinner, the NAACP will sponsor a Veterans’ Day celebration on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 4p.m. at Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church, (580 N. High Street) in Christiansburg.  Retired Marine Sergeant Lamont Calloway will speak. The colors will be presented by the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.

We invite all veterans to participate in the processional.

This year, the special offering will be taken with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Southwest Virginia Cemetery Veterans’ Cemetery Volunteers Wreath Program.

Each year the money collected in the offering goes to some cause that helps local veterans, Jim Klagge, communications person for the group, said.

A reception will follow the processional.  All are welcome.

All are welcome too to the November General Body meeting of the Montgomery County-Radford City-Floyd County NAACP will be held on Sunday, Nov. 19, at Shaeffer Memorial Baptist Church (570 High Street) in Christiansburg at 3:30 p.m.

This meeting is on the 3rd Sunday, to avoid conflict with the Thanksgiving weekend.
