The 2017 football season is finally over, and experts are thinking already about next season. Virginia Tech finished 24th in the final AP poll released Tuesday.

The ranking marks the first time since 2010 and 2011 that Tech has finished in the final AP poll in back-to-back seasons. The Hokies were ranked in every final AP poll between 2004 and 2011.

The Hokies open the 2018 season at Florida State Monday, Sept. 3.

I do believe there is a lot of work to do for the football program. They will have to fill some big shoes on defense, upgrade the offensive line and work on a consistent QB. The third year for Fuente could be the most important.

Marty’s 2018 to early preseason top 10:

  1. Georgia

  2. Alabama

  3. Clemson

  4. Ohio State

  5. Miami

  6. Oklahoma State

  7. Penn State

  8. UCLA

  9. Texas

  10. Oklahoma

In other news:

On the basketball scene, Radford High School remains unbeaten in boys play, and junior Miles Jones is starting to gain interest from college recruiters such as Hampton University. Jones has grown three inches in the last year and continues to dominate opponents. His father, Mike Jones, is the head coach at Radford University.

The Radford University women lost their first game at the Dedmon Center in 21 tries earlier this week.

On a sad for minor league baseball fans like me, Derby, the Team Bat Dog for the Double-A Trenton Thunder, passed away after a battle with cancer. He caught the media’s attention in 2008 when he started returning bats to the dugout after each at-bat.

During his time at Trenton, he returned bats for Yankee greats like Alex Rodriguez and Aaron Judge. He became the full-time “bat dog” in 2010. His son, Rookie, will now pick up the family profession.

Thanks for all the memories Derby. You set the standard that others will now have to follow.
