Stay and Play, a Library Playgroup

Every Wednesday after Storytime, 10:30 – 11:30 AM, Blacksburg Library

Under their parent’s supervision, babies and toddlers can play during this informal gathering. This program is for ages 0-4 and meets in the storytime room.

Wee Play, a Library Playgroup

Every Wednesday after Storytime EXCEPT the first Wednesday of the month, 10:30 – 11:30 AM, Christiansburg Library

Parents and caregivers are invited to socialize while supervising an informal play group for their babies and toddlers. Ages 0-4.

Art Exhibit: Christiansburg Institute Artifacts

All Month of February, at the Blacksburg Library

The Christiansburg Institute was the first high school in Southwest Virginia to educate emancipated slaves. Founded in 1866 in Christiansburg, Virginia, the school grew to become a 185-acre campus with approximately 14 educational buildings and attracted black students from across the state. The Christiansburg Institute will be sharing artifacts from the former school, inviting the communities throughout Montgomery County to share in its remarkable and powerful story.

Junior Artist Program

Become a Junior Artist and earn a sketchbook! Just pick up an art card at the front desk, visit Miss Jessie’s Gallery, answer a few questions, then return your signed card to the front desk for a bookmark. Complete five cards, and you will get your very own artist sketchbook. Parental assistance is encouraged, particularly for the littlest Junior Artists!

A Crusade for Mountain Women’s Rights in the Fiction of Emma Bell Miles

Thursday, February 15, 6:00 – 7:30 PM at the Blacksburg Library

Emma Bell Miles was a writer and author living on Walden’s Ridge in southeastern Tennessee in the early 1900s. A mountain wife and mother of five children, she struggled throughout her life with poverty and oppression. This presentation by editor of the 2016 anthology, The Common Lot and Other Stories, Grace Toney Edwards, will tell the author’s own life story and highlights of her fiction through photographs, drawings, and paintings done by Miles, and through illustrations done by other artists for the original magazine publications.
