Radford University’s Women’s & Gender Studies program will host Megan Gogerty’s solo performance “Lady Macbeth and Her Pal, Megan” at 7:30 p.m. on March 14 and15 at in the Bondurant Auditorium, Preston Hall.
When Gogerty, a comedian and playwright based in Iowa City, Iowa, was informed that she was unable to play Lady Macbeth—a figure of powerful darkness—she set out to prove everyone wrong.
While in pursuit of her performance, Gogerty found that she had to re-evaluate her idea of Lady Macbeth while reconsidering herself as both a woman and a comedian.
“Lady Macbeth and Her Pal, Megan,” directed by Saffron Henke, mixes social analysis and humorous confession while arguing for female empowerment and communal resistance. The play promises to serve up jokes and wit in an insightful and humorous show.
The performance is made possible by the support of the Southeast Women’s Studies Association and Radford University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, Department of Psychology and Center for Gender Studies in celebration of March as Women’s History Month.
Gogerty teaches playwriting at the University of Iowa Playwrights’s Workshop. Gogerty’s work, which has been produced all over the world, includes “Hillary Clinton Got Me Pregnant,” listed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s annual Top Ten Best Plays; “Love Jerry,” winner of three Talkin’ Broadway citations and four New York Musical Theatre Festival Excellence Awards; Housebroken; and “Save Me, Dolly Parton,” named a Best Play in Atlanta by Creative Loafing.
