“In the Third Person: Community Photographs after April 16, 2007,” an exhibit in Newman Library’s second floor commons, will be on display April 12 through April 17.
The exhibit, part of Virginia Tech’s 2018 Day of Remembrance, honors those lost in the April 16 tragedy and recognizes the support of the community. It features photos taken by members of the community in the weeks following April 16, 2007.
On display will be 41 images by more than 25 photographers. Captions from the photographers, expressing their emotions at the time they took them, are included with the photographs. The exhibit is a collaboration of the University Libraries and Student Engagement and Campus Life.
A second exhibit in Newman Library’s second floor commons, “A Community of Learners, a Legacy of Achievement,” will feature a selection of books that reflect the disciplines and interests of each of the 32 victims.
Expressions of condolence received by the university in the weeks that followed the tragedy will be on display in “Remembrance and Recognition,” an exhibit in the University Libraries’ Special Collections on the first floor of Newman Library. The display will include a large memory book of letters and drawings that Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students gathered from schools across Florida. The book was a student-driven project.
A small garden space for quiet reflection outside of Squires Student Center’s Old Dominion Ballroom features the large inscribed rock received from Itawamba Community College, Fulton, Mississippi, and stones from previous April 16 Perspective Gallery Exhibitions. Itawamba Community College planted a dogwood tree in honor of the victims, and this garden also includes a dogwood tree.
