New River Community College CNA students practice assisting a “patient” to a wheelchair.

For those with an interest in assisting nurses in the care of patients, New River Community College offers a 7-week nurse-aid course beginning May 14.

The course provides class instruction, skills lab practice and supervised clinical experience in a healthcare agency. Students will learn to care for older patients with an emphasis on the social, emotional and spiritual needs of geriatric patients.

Nurse-aid students will focus on procedures, communication and interpersonal relations, observation, charting and reporting, safety and infection control, and anatomy and physiology. Personal care, nutrition and patient feeding, and death and dying are also discussed.

At the end of the class, students are eligible to take the National Nurse Aid Assessment Program exam to become a Certified Nurse Aid.

Certified Nurse Aids are employed in hospitals, physicians’ offices, long-term care facilities, rehabilitative services, home health agencies, industry and private duty care.

The class meets in the evening on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 9:30 p.m.

To register for this course, visit www.nr.edu/register. Prospective NRCC students may visit www.nr.edu/admissions for enrollment information or call the Admissions Office at 540-674-3603.
