Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery will host “All Dressed in White”: The History of the American Wedding from May 11 through June 30.

The exhibit will take visitors back in time and show the history of the American wedding through fashion and objects.

There will be an opening reception on Friday, May 11, from 5:30-7:30 pm, featuring authentic jewelry pieces provided by P.R. Sturgill Fine Jewelry, as well as interpreters to bring the history to life.

“All Dressed in White” will take visitors through four major time periods in the development of the American wedding: Victorian Period of the 1840s-1890s, New Century of the 1910s-1920s, Boom Years of the 1940s-1960s and New America of the 1970s-1990s.

Across these times periods, visitors will learn how the wedding ceremony emerged as an American custom among the wealthy and how it transformed into a rite that all Americans can now partake of.

In the exhibit, visitors will see wedding fashions from 150 years of history as well as traditional gifts given to couples during these time periods. These are made available through Becky Blevins, Connor Family, Sherrie Cullaty, Marsha DuBose, Kay Ellerman, Clare Fugate, Amanda Gardner, Martha Gardner, Janice Herzog, Darlene Lane, Kathy Lester, Annyce Levy, Carrie Mahin, Roxanne Miear, Angela Moore, Meagan Pratt, Judi Quesenberry, Joyce Sims, Meg Stone, Linda Waggaman and the Radford University fashion department.

The Historic Smithfield and the Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center provided additional material support.

Throughout 2018, Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery is celebrating 20 years as Radford’s museum. It is located in the historic home of General Gabriel C. Wharton and his wife Nannie Radford Wharton. The site is a three in one experience: House Museum, History Exhibits and Art Gallery. There’s always something new to see.

Ann Turner of Alter Plus, Cook’s Formals, Nesselrod Bed and Breakfast, Rockwood Manor, Christian Travel, Ponnie’s Boutique and Gifts and Todd’s Jewelry made the exhibit possible.
