Witherspoon, Carl Aquilla

Carl Aquilla Witherspoon, Jr., 96, of Blacksburg passed away Monday, May 14, 2018 at Kroontje Health Care Center. He was born in Bishopville, S.C. on February 9, 1922 to the late Carl A., Sr. and Hattie Ella Smyth Witherspoon.


He was also preceded in death by his wife Venita Willis Witherspoon, sisters, Coralie O. Witherspoon and Sarah V. Witherspoon. He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University with a degree in Chemistry. He was a veteran of World War II serving in Africa, India, China, and England in the United States Army. He ran electroplating shops at Poly-Scientific, Electro-Tec and American Instruments for over 30 years. Carl also ran Witherspoon Photo Lab for over 50 years. He was a member of Rotary Club, American Electroplaters Society and Blacksburg Baptist Church for 57 years. He was an avid gardener, history buff and amateur herpetologist.

The family wants to express their appreciation for his wonderful care over the past 10 years to the staff of Warm Hearth. He will be remembered for being wise, generous, with a strong work ethic and patience, which was valuable when raising four boys. He is survived by his children, Dr. Mark E. Witherspoon(Judy), Barry K. Witherspoon(Judy), Paul K. Witherspoon, Al B. Witherspoon, fourteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be conducted today, Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Dr. Tommy McDearis officiating.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Clothing Bank 141 Jackson St., Blacksburg. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr. SW, Blacksburg.
