The Builders Club at Christiansburg Middle School finished the academic year helping homebound seniors and their pets.
Over 200 pounds of cat and dog food were collected on a recent drive and donated to the New River Valley Agency on Aging to distribute on the Agency’s home delivered meal routes.
Student members of the Builder’s Club set up a table in the school’s hallway and educated students on the beneficial effects of owning pets and the struggles of homebound seniors to obtain pet food for their household friends.
From those conversations, students at CMS went out shopping with their parents to make a difference in the lives of area seniors.
The Builder’s Club at CMS is a Kiwanis club designed for youth. Student members take an active role in community issues with projects ranging from recycling at CMS, canned food drives and lap blankets for seniors.
“After hearing the Agency’s presentation at a recent Kiwanis meeting in town, we all wanted to step in and help seniors have one less thing to worry about in feeding their animals,” Kelley Olsen, teacher at CMS and advisor for the club, said.
The Agency on Aging is thankful for the leadership of Mrs. Olsen and the talented young men and women who worked hard to make a positive difference in the lives of area seniors.
“Mr. Hammons came to collect the donation and talk with our members about the positive impacts of their efforts during our last club meeting and party,” Olsen said. “The club is looking forward to the next school year so that middle school-aged students are able to see the value of community service and hope that it becomes an integral part of their character.”
