Christiansburg cultivates Culture Crossings

Casey Jenkins believes there is history in Christiansburg that should be highlighted, so he created Culture Crossings in an effort to showcase some of the town’s older attractions.

The 1909 Courthouse Eagle is one of 26 attractions that Christiansburg’s Culture Crossings highlights. The eagle was on the old courthouse until 1978 and now resides in town square in downtown Christiansburg.

Since becoming the events coordinator for the Town of Christiansburg, Jenkins has largely been tasked with revamping the farmer’s market, but is also responsible for coordinating events to engage the community.

He worked as a museum curator in Richmond before coming back to the New River Valley, so history is one of his passions.

”I realized that there are a lot of cultural gems, history and art in this town that people just don’t know about, so it just went from there,” he said.

Jenkins, with the help of Sherry Wyatt of the Montgomery Museum, came up with a list of 26 different attractions with a short description all packed into a neat and tidy brochure.

The featured categories are the Downtown Historic District, E Main Street Historic District, S Franklin Street Historic District Cambria Historic District, cemeteries and miscellaneous items.

Some of the places featured include the Oaks Victorian Inn, the 1909 Courthouse eagle and Sunset Cemetery.

Jenkins said that he believes the tour could be done in as little as a day but could extend over two for those that want to take there time.

In addition to providing residents and out-of-towners with a better understanding of Christiansburg’s cultural offerings, Jenkins said that he was also happy with the cost of the project, which amounted to $300 for 1000 brochures that can be found at town facilities, the museum, the Montgomery County Government Center and most hotels.

Accessible through multiple media, there is an interactive Google map with all of the location pinned as well as the descriptions at the town’s website under the Community tab.

Jenkins said that he is working with a third-party developer to make an interactive phone app that he hopes will be ready sometime this fall.
