Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley is hosting its Potter in the Park event on Sept. 1, the first day of Hogwarts. The run or walk Triwizard Tri-Mile Trail Race begins at 9 ¾ o’clock (9:45 a.m.) at Nellie’s Cave Park in Blacksburg.

‘Accio’ is the word Harry Potter would use to summon an object. With the help of Literacy Volunteers of NRV’s tutors, students summon literacy and conversational English. The LVNRV’s fund-raising Harry Potter-themed race is planned for Sept 1, the first day of Hogwarts.

The event will feature a costume contest, quidditch demonstrations, “house” prizes, and other fun for muggles and wizards alike. Register by today, Aug. 15, and receive a free T-shirt.

The challenging Triwizard Tri-Mile course will wind through single-track trails, field paths, and roadway that traverse the ”wizarding world” and “forbidden forest.”

Muggles and wizards can participate as an individual or enroll in Hogwarts as a team of four. Children under 6 are free. The “cloak of invisibility” virtual runner option allows community members to walk/run any time, and still support literacy and receive a T-shirt.

The race raises money to support the work the agency does to match trained volunteer tutors with adults desiring to achieve literacy-related goals.

To register for the run and for more information about the work the agency does, visit www.lvnrv.org or call (540) 382-7262, or send “an owl” to info@lvnrv.org.

LVNRV is a 501(c)(3) organization, United Way partner agency that provides adults with free instruction in reading, writing, basic math, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), basic computer skills and preparation for exams such as the GED. LVNRV also offers family literacy programs to help adults learn to read with their children.
