Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley will hold a tutor training for adult volunteers interested in helping other adults improve their literacy and language skills for increased independence and better employment on Thursday, Sept. 13, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Radford Public Library.

Volunteer tutors are asked to make a minimum of a one-year commitment and meet with their students 1-3 hours per week. Tutors will complete on-line training modules in addition to the group training session on Sept. 13.

LVNRV provides free tutoring in reading, writing, math, English as a Second Language (ESL), basic computer skills, pre-GED, and job readiness skills to help adults in the New River Valley achieve their literacy-related goals.

Tutoring, which is one-to-one or small group, takes place at New River Valley-wide public locations and days and times that are convenient to both the tutor and the adult learner.

Quarterly in-service meetings are held to support tutors, and tutors are required to submit quarterly progress reports.

There are nearly 15,000 adults in the New River Valley without a high school or equivalency diploma.

To register, please go to www.lvnrv.org or call (540) 382-7262.
