We, in Hokie territory, apparently have been pronouncing former VT quarterback Tyrod Taylor’s name wrong for a very long time.
His new National Football League team is featured on the ESPN television show, “Hard Knocks,” and in the premiere episode, it was pointed out his name is pronounced TUH-Rod.
Like others, I was confused. I have heard it since his early days in Blacksburg and even called him Tyrod during a visit to Beeks Elementary School. But again, I was wrong.
Apparently, a lot of commentators have been doing it wrong for a long, long time, and he never corrected it.
We’ve been mispronouncing his name this entire time, dating back to his time at Virginia Tech.
The funny thing is that his parents can’t even agree on the correct pronunciation. I am so confused and don’t how to deal with the controversy.
Now, I have been told there is the correct way to list a local high school player, and myself and other sports writers are doing it wrong.
Christiansburg’s MJ Hunter has joined the Tyrod problem. Does or doesn’t he have dots between his initials. Apparently, he has letters for first names.
Let’s try to get this straight—M.J. is really MJ. I even had Hunter’s mother weigh in on the problem.
I looked back at the original roster for the high school and of course, his name is listed different ways on different copies. So, here we go again.
I surrender and will from now not include any periods in his name.
MJ, I apologize for the mistake. At least it will be correct before you play in the NFL.
Meanwhile in Radford, P.J. Prioleau should have periods when most of us have not done it right either. P.J. stands for Pierson Jalen. Sorry for the confusion.
