ACC honors Ashby, Farley

Following Virginia Tech’s 24-3 victory over No. 19 Florida State on Monday night, Rayshard Ashby and Caleb Farley were named ACC Players of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Ashby collected Linebacker of the Week honors and Farley earned Defensive Back of the Week accolodes as the Hokies turned in a dominant defensive performance to register Tech’s first victory in Tallahassee since 1974.

Ashby (5-10, 230) made his first career start and looked like a season performer, tallying seven tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and a forced fumble against the Seminoles. The Chesterfield, Virginia native made the second-most tackles by a Hokie in Tallahassee. The sophomore’s forced fumble in the first quarter to set up a Brian Johnson field goal to give Tech a 10-0 advantage that it never relinquished.

Farley (6-2, 202) played in his first collegiate after sitting out the 2017 campaign with a knee injury. His debut contest featured a pair of interceptions, a sack, two tackles and a postgame interview with ESPN’s Maria Taylor. After Tech went up 17-3 midway through the second quarter, Florida State’s first play on its possession saw quarterback Deondre Francois throw a skinny post and Farley undercutting it to collect his first collegiate interception. The Hickory, North Carolina native hauled in another interception in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Knowles MEC athlete of week

Senior Bailey Knowles of the Concord University women’s cross-country team has been voted as the Mountain East Conference Athlete of the Week, the league office released Tuesday afternoon.

Knowles was the top runner for Concord as it opened its season at the Hokie Invite Friday night at Virginia Tech. Knowles navigated the 4,000-meter course in a time of 15:20 and placed 18th overall.

Led by the Christiansburg native, the Mountain Lions finished fifth as a team as they were top Division II team in the field.

Everett Big South POW

Senior defender Jane Everett was tabbed as the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, which was announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.

Playing a full 90 minutes for the first time this season, Everett led a Highlander defense that only allowed one goal this week. The one score came off a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in Thursday’s match with Mount St. Mary’s.

That was one of just 10 shots taken in the entire match when the Highlanders played the Mountaineers. Eight of their 10 shots came in the second half and Radford held Mount St. Mary’s to a .100 shot percentage – the second lowest all season by the Highlander defense.

Glatthorn to represent USA

It will be a mix of old and new when the U.S. Women’s National Team takes the field against James Madison in the Team USA Fall Classic at US Lacrosse headquarters on Oct. 6.
U.S. Team Head Coach Jenny Levy announced the 27-player roster that will wear the red, white and blue for the exhibition game against the defending NCAA champions, Levy’s first time coaching Team USA.

Kelly Glatthorn finished her career with the Hokies in May, after co-captaining the squad to its first ever NCAA appearance. Her class was the winningest in program history, registering 36 victories and setting the single season mark at 14 after the record breaking 2018 season.
This past summer, Glatthorn played in the UWLX as a member of the Philadelphia Force.
