Frank Wayne (Benny) Surface, Sr., 71, of Blacksburg, went home to his final reward on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife and lifelong love, Linda Smith Surface; his parents, Harry William and Carrie Elizabeth Snider Surface; sisters, Carolyn “Lois” Pack and Bertha Jane Shelor; his son-in-law, Steven Dale Moore; and his grandson, Noah Matthew Andes.
Dad loved his family deeply, and would lend assistance to anyone who asked, regardless of the circumstances. Dad was the king of whistling. He whistled from morning to night, no matter what the situation. You could always find him anywhere you went…just listen for his whistle.
Over the years, Dad worked a lot of long days and many nights at Litton Poly Scientific, driving a school bus for Montgomery County Public Schools, working for the Town of Blacksburg, stocking shelves at Kroger and took pride in owning Frank’s Lawn Service.
After spending many years as a volunteer helping the community, he was a life-time member of the Blacksburg Rescue Squad. He always enjoyed the camaraderie and meeting new people.
A few acres in the cul-de-sac in Crawford Farms was where Dad and Mom called home, and he loved it there. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge was their home away from home. He loved Dolly Parton and liked nothing less than to brag about going to the Dollywood Parade to see Dolly.
He loved his sports, including football and NASCAR. He enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and Virginia Tech play, and cheered them on, even if it didn’t always go his way.
In retirement, Dad finally got his big flat screen and easy chair. He kept the blinds open while he watched T.V. so he could also see the deer playing in the yard.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters and son-in-law, Lisa Surface Moore, Karen and Phillip Andes; his son and daughter-in-law, Frank Wayne, Jr., and Jocy Surface; nine grandchildren, Brandon Harless, Courtney Moore, Eric Moore, Logan Surface, Trevan Surface, Trent Surface, Lynden Surface, Hope Andes and Hannah Andes; two great-grandchildren, Jake Key-Harless, Orion Surface-Moore; sisters, Lina Pedraza and Cynthia Hiner.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tommy McDearis officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Blacksburg Rescue Squad, 1300 Progress St. NW, Blacksburg, VA 24060.
