Eagle squad wins regionals

Auburn High School won the 1A West competition cheer regionals earlier this week. Auburn beat Grundy and Riverheads to advance to competition cheer states on Saturday, November 3.

Hokie ACC swimmer of week

Virginia Tech’s Ian Ho has been selected as the ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week as announced Monday by the league office.

Ho and the Hokies defeated Penn State (255-98) and No. 10 Ohio State (182-171) over the weekend. The Blacksburg, Virginia native won four races and placed second in two more events in his first appearance of the season.

The senior won the 50 free style with an NCAA B time of 19.88 – the fourth fastest in the NCAA so far this season. He also claimed the 100 free and was part of two first place relay teams, including the 200 free and 200 medley. In addition, Ho helped the Hokies to second place finishes in the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay.

Auburn golfers all-state

Jentzen Gore and Carter Vance have been named to the Class 1 all-state team, announced Monday by the Virginia High School League. The golfers helped lead Auburn High School to a second place finish in the state 1A tournament held earlier this month.

Blacksburg’s Meng tied for fifth

The Virginia High School League held this year’s Girls’ Open golf tournament at Springfield Golf Course. Blacksburg’s Melissa Meng finished in a fifth place tie during the October 20 event.

Leadoff banquet date announced

The Virginia Tech softball program will officially kick off the 2019 season with its third annual Leadoff Banquet, which will be held on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. ET at the German Club. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

Space is limited and all proceeds from the event will go towards locker room updates.

Attendees will be treated to dinner, a silent auction, a panel discussion with Coach Pete D’Amour and players and games for prizes, including trivia and 50/50 bingo. Auction items will be announced at a later date.

Tickets are $35 per person and $350 for a table, which includes eight chairs. Cash or check will be accepted at the door. Please contact Whitney Davis Showalter with any questions via email at whitd@vt.edu, or phone at 231-7240.

Thrower added to roster

Virginia Tech track and field and cross country director Dave Cianelli announced on Monday the newest addition to the Hokies’ family. The Hokies’ throws group, under coach Andrew Dubs, adds talented thrower Enid Duut.

Duut placed seventh in the discus at the World Junior Championships this summer with a throw of 48.59 meters (159 feet, 5 inches). The Rotterdam, Netherlands native’s top throws are 14.16 meters (46 feet, 5.5 inches) in the shot put, and 53.02 meters (173 feet, 11 inches) in the discus. Duut will be joining the Hokies in January.

RU at Lebron’s alma mater

Radford’ University’s match-up with Duquesne, scheduled for Nov. 17 as part of the Gotham Basketball Classic, will be played at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School’s LeBron James Arena in Akron, Ohio.
The game, set for a Noon tip, was originally meant to be held at Duquesne’s on-campus A.J. Palumbo Center, but the move was required to accommodate the NCAA Division III volleyball national championship which will take place Nov. 15-17.
Legendary NBA player LeBron James graduated from St. Vincent-St. Mary in 2003 and pledged $1 million towards renovations in 2013. The renovations included new hardwood flooring, bleachers, branded scoreboards, lighting and all new sports equipment.

Highlanders honored by Big South

The Big South conference announced today that Radford University women’s volleyball middle hitter Lilijana Henderson (Wellington Florida/Wellington) was named “Freshman of the Week” and classmate Grace Green (Oak Lawn, Illinois/Marist) took home “Defensive Player of the Week” honors.
Henderson has filled in nicely of late for the injured Amaya Rousseau and was rewarded with the Big South Freshman of the Week award. The freshman recorded 21 kills and committed just two errors in 49 attempts last week for a terrific .388 hitting mark. The Wellington, Florida native recorded a career-high 11 kills and added three blocks at Campbell. She also blasted a pair of kills in a key 9-0 run in the third set against the Camels.
She followed that up with 10 kills and hit .529 versus Hampton and pounded four kills during a decisive 12-1 spurt in the opening set against Hampton and also staked the Highlanders to a 27-26 lead with a kill in the second set.
Green, Radford’s rookie libero, tracked a combined 5.57 digs per set in the two wins last week and earned the Big South Defensive Player of the Week award. The Oak Lawn, Illinois native recorded 18 digs and a service ace against Campbell and followed that up with 21 digs and a pair of aces at Hampton.

Donuts for 5K

Join St. Vincent’s Home (SVH) Services for the Second Annual Run for Donuts 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, November 3 as we raise funds to meet the needs of individuals with unique learning challenges across the lifespan. Bring your family and friends to run, jog, and even walk through the beautiful grounds at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.

The first 150 people to register for either the 5K or the Fun Run will receive an exclusive race knit beanie cap. All participants will get to pick out a yummy donut from Dunkin’ Donuts to munch on at the finish line – and those running the 5K will have munchkins to munch on along the course route.

The 5k race starts at 8:30am, with the Fun Run starting at 8:45am. The registration fee is $30 for the 5K and $20 for the Fun Run. For questions or to register, contact Teri Nance at 366-7399 or teri.nance@svhservices.org.
