The Virginia Tech women’s soccer program is unveiling its 2019 signing class in a different way. Rather than announcing all of them and their accomplishments in one release, the Hokies will highlight each new signee individually, which will include a brief “Get to Know” Q&A, until all of the incoming freshmen have been announced.
Our next 2019 addition to the program is Holly Rose Weber, a 5-foot-6 midfielder from Springfield, Virginia. She currently attends Bishop Ireton High School and is undecided in her majoring when she arrives at Tech. For the Cardinals, Weber only played soccer for two seasons, but did earn a pair of varsity letters for coach Gino Leon as a freshman and sophomore.
She was named to the All-WCAC team, earning first team honors in 2016, while also leading the team as its captain. Weber also ran on the track team, earning three varsity letters, and winning the Catholic School state titles in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles in 2017, while setting the school record in both events. She also placed second in the long jump and third in the 200-meter dash on her way to being named the MVP of that year’s state meet.
Weber’s club time includes seasons with FC Virginia DA and McLean ECNL and she also has ODP experience. Highlighting this is her USYS ODP National Training invitation in 2015, and her time with US Soccer training center (2014-16) and the US Soccer Player Development program (2015-16). Her club was also state cup finalists in 2014.
“Holly Rose is a crafty, dynamic midfield player who’s good on the ball and can be tricky with it,” Tech head women’s soccer coach Chugger Adair said. “She has some savviness to her game and has some fun, attacking movement out of her in the midfield. She can get behind the forwards as an attacking mid or in the wide midfield areas for us. She has a great, creative mind and we look forward to her helping our attacking group.”
Why did you choose Tech? I chose Virginia Tech because it felt like a place I could comfortably call “home” away from home. I’ve been visiting Virginia Tech for many years to watch the women’s soccer team and my sister (Lilly) play. From the beautiful scenery, advanced academics, hard-working team mentality and the amazing facilities, I knew it was the place for me.
What was your favorite thing about your visit? My favorite thing about my visit was experiencing the team’s daily workout and seeing how the amazing athletic facilities.
What do you like about the Tech soccer program? I really admire how hard working the team is. You can always see they are working their hardest and getting through victories and losses together. It’s also a fun and encouraging environment.
What are your soccer strengths? My soccer strengths are my technical ability and my vision of the field. I am always trying new moves in practices and games in order to create plays that are not expected. I keep an open mind and see what gaps are open to play through that will get my team up the field to success.
Who is your favorite pro player (why)? My favorite pro player is Julie Ertz (midfielder for the Chicago Red Stars and a member of the US women’s national team), although we play different positions. I really admire her drive and dedication to the game and to life. She says “It’s not about what you don’t have, it’s about what you make with what you’ve got.” Her beliefs in hard work always inspire me to try and always be the best I can be in everything I do. It’s very important for everyone to know this quote she said because you’re the only you in this world and what you’ve got is what you must use to be the best you can be.
What is your most memorable soccer moment (why)? My most memorable soccer moment was my freshman year playing on the Bishop Ireton Varsity soccer team with my sister (Lilly). We were in the WCAC semifinals neck-and-neck with a team and went into overtime tied at 1-1. We kept fighting through that exciting game and then my sister finally slotted a ball in the back of the net to win and go to the finals. The rush I felt with my sister and team was beyond joyful.
What do you think you will major in? I’m not positive yet because I enjoy so many things but I’m thinking about majoring in communications, business, interior design, architecture or cinema.
What’s one thing you’d want Tech fans to know about you? I play fiddle in a band and we recently cut an album.
