Dolph Henry, Jr. passed away quietly in his sleep on Wednesday, Dec 19, 2018 at his Commonwealth Senior Living residence. He had been a resident at Commonwealth since 2014 when he and his wife, Betty Martin Henry, moved from their home of 50 years on Hickory Road in Radford.

He was born Mary 13, 1928 in Suffolk, Virginia to his parents, Dolphus E. Henry, Sr. and Fannie Sterling Henry. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Va. and was inducted in the U. S. Army in 1946. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1948. Dolph attended VA Tech from 1948 to 1950 after which he began work at Hercules Powder Co doing instrument repair work and scale servicing.

During his career at Hercules, he worked as a draftsman in the engineering department, a designer and assistant chief draftsman, and finally as a safety engineer. He retired from Hercules in 1990.

Both Dolph and Betty Henry were proud supporters of Radford University where they endowed a scholarship in the Visual and Performing Arts.

Dolph is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Betty M. Henry. He is survived by his son, Dolphus E. Henry, III and daughter-in-law, Judith of Black Mountain, N.C.; and his granddaughter, Jessica H., and her husband, John P. Thrasher, Jr. of San Francisco, Calif.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, 2018 at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 11 a.m. with Dr. Paul Lane officiating.

The Henry family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, Virginia.
