Huckleberry Trail Christiansburg Phase III bids due Feb 7; pre-bid conference explains requirements, Jan 29

In an announcement, the Town of Christiansburg has requested sealed bids for the Huckleberry Trail Christiansburg Extension Phase III project.

The work described by the request extends the trail nearly a mile from its current end behind the Food Lion Shopping Center to the existing sidewalk along North Franklin Street at Independence Boulevard beside the high school.

Bids for the 10-foot-wide multi-use paved trail must be submitted to the Town Administrative office (100 East Main Street) in Christiansburg, VA, by 3pm local time, Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019.

At that time, the bids will be publicly opened and read aloud.

To prepare prospective bidders, optional pre-bid conference will be held on Jan. 29 at 11 at the Christiansburg Town Hall (00 East Main Street) in Christiansburg.

“We’ll go through the plans and talk about general requirements for the project,” Eli Mannon, civil engineer for the town and contact for the project.

According to the announcement, the stretch of trail to be built is approximately “4,600 linear feet of asphalt trail and appurtenances,” like benches, handrails and pedestrian signals – items necessary on a trail, but not big enough to list in the request. A five percent bid security must be submitted with each bid.

The length of the extension is determined in 2015 by cost and a sensible end-point.

“Part of the requirements for our funding is that it has to start and end at a point that’s accessible – that it doesn’t start out in a field somewhere and that it ends at a point, in this case, the sidewalk at Independence and N. Franklin, that makes sense,” Mannon said.

The project is funded through VDOT and the current total for the project construction and engineer is just over a million dollars. The project estimate is closer to $1.1 million for the base bid, according to Melissa Demmitt, public relations director for the town, “with the option for an additive depending on the price of the bids that come back.”

Major Items of work are listed as an asphalt section, a gravity-block retaining wall, similar to walls around the town hall, grading, seeding, and landscaping
