Guild hosts quilt show, March 29

The Star Quilters Guild is sponsoring a quilt show at the Berglund Civic Center in Roanoke from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, March 29, and 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 30. Admission is $7, with children 12 and under free.

Quilters from Bedford, Buchanan, Boones Mill, Blacksburg, and many other communities in this part of the state will display over 200 quilts in many styles: Applique, Art, Monochromatic, Fashion, Miniature, Modern, Special Techniques, and Traditional.

“Door prizes, 11 vendors of sewing and quilting supplies, opportunity quilts, an exhibit by our Comfort Quilt group, tables for Ryan’s Case for Smiles and the Virginia Quilt Museum, a display of Round Robin quilts, art quilts and a demonstration by our featured artist, Nancy Oldham, and a “bed turning” illustrating the history of quilt-making,” the group’s announcement said.

The guild was founded in 1981, and 30 years later they tried to figure out how many shows they had held.

“The early shows were smaller and were held at churches and schools. Then several were held in a local hotel. If there was one every other year, then this is the 18th,” quilter Laura Perry wrote in an email. The guild made the jump to the civic center in 2009 she said.

“It’s a lot of work, but we enjoy showing people what is happening now in the quilt world. People still love the traditional bed quilts, but there’s a lot of “pushing the boundaries,” too.
