Beans and Banjos and a Hall of Famer – John and Kathie Hollandsworth will be the featured musicians at April’s Beans and Banjos. Fort Vause will open the show with bluegrass and bluegrass flavored blues, ballads, gospel, novelty and show tunes. Along with the music, beans, cornbread and desserts will be served – dinner and a show Shawsville style. Supper and music begin at 6 p.m. in the Dr. George R. Smith Community Center inside Shawsville’s Meadowbrook Center, 267 Alleghany Spring Road, at the corner of Alleghany Spring and U.S. 460.
Rollin’ on the River Food Truck Rodeo – More than 25 food trucks are scheduled to serve specialty food and treats in Radford’s waterfront Bisset Park from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The event is being sponsored by Thai This Express, Radford University Athletics, Front Porch Recycling, SignWise, New River Adventure and the Radford Visitor’s Center.
National Prescription Drug Take-Back – 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Blacksburg Recreation Center parking lot, 725 Patrick Henry Dr. Bring your pills for disposal; sites cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches. Blood Screening – The Rotary Club of Christiansburg-Blacksburg and LewisGale Hospital Montgomery will host their 45th bi-annual blood screening from 6:30-10 a.m. in the lobby of LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg. A public service to New River Valley residents, the fasting blood test screens more than 30 different markers including cholesterol, glucose, and red blood indices at a significantly reduced cost of $40. Tackle the Tower! – 2-4 p.m. at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Have you ever jumped from five meters in the air into 17 feet of water? Well at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center you can! Five meter platform and three meter spring board open to the public on April 7 and 28. Come and Tackle the Tower at the CAC! All who participate must be able to swim 25 yards. Fee: daily admission.
NAACP meeting – The April General Body meeting of the Montgomery County-Radford City-Floyd County branch of the NAACP will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Old Hill School, 570 High St NE in Christiansburg (next to Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church). The CREDO presentation will be by Bob Beckman, President of Citizens for Sustainable Development. He will provide an overview of broadband coverage in Montgomery County and options for better service using the public-private partnership model. All are welcome! Help save the Pilot Community Center – Pilot School was built in 1921 and served the academic needs of the local community until the 1960s when it became the Pilot Community Center. The building needs some repairs, and we are asking local residents to help determine the future of this historic Appalachian structure and how it will continue to best serve the community.
