Betty Ruth Scott Culbertson ran into the arms of Jesus on June 1, 2019, at the age of 89. She was a wonderfully devoted wife to her husband of 41 years, Richard K. (Dick) Culbertson, who will miss her terribly and is thankful for every day he had with her by his side. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Scott Gibbs, nephew Peter Gibbs, and her children Dody (Bob) Kois, Sue (Ed) Snow, Debbie Taylor, Prue (Allen) Miller, Liz (Ken) Evans, Julie East, Tim (Kathy) Taylor, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was pre-deceased by her daughter Ann Culbertson.

Betty Ruth (never just Betty) was born in Lynchburg to Ewing and Dorothy Scott. Although her family lived in many places, one of Betty Ruth’s favorites was the campus of Sweet Briar College where she and her cherished sister, Dorothy, had many adventures while their father taught Chemistry.

Betty Ruth graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Syracuse University, married, and raised her children in Virginia. She loved the mountains and hiking with her children (she hiked well into her 80s), and she walked a mile in her neighborhood every day until her last. Another of her passions was writing poetry. She was a published poet and shared her works with family and her poetry group.

Her faith in God was solid and strong, and she shared it generously with her family and friends. She was a long-time member of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church and supported many ministries around the world, both financially and prayerfully. Her faithfulness in prayer leaves a legacy that will bear much fruit for years to come.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Betty Ruth’s memory may be made to Mustard Seed International, Inc., P. O. Box 91569, Austin, TX, 78709-1569 or The Voice of the Martyrs, 1815 SE Bison Rd., Bartlesville, OK, 74006-9938.
