DUBLIN – New River Community College, in partnership with AdvanSix, recently held a professional signing day for graduates of the college’s instrumentation and control automation technology program.

L to R: Back Row (standing)—Dr. Peter Anderson, NRCC Vice President of Instruction and Student Services; Montie Fleshman, NRCC Instrumentation Professor; Dr. Pat Huber, NRCC President; Monty Hedge, AdvanSix Electrical and Instrumentational Execution Leader

Allen Napier, of Williamsburg, and Andrew Lowe, of Dublin, joined the AdvanSix team on May 20, just five days after graduating from NRCC. Justin Walsted and William Dance were unable to attend the ceremony but have also accepted positions at AdvanSix. All four will work as instrumentation mechanics.

On May 15, 46 students graduated from NRCC with instrumentation and control automation technology degrees. Students from NRCC who graduate in this program typically have multiple jobs offers before they graduate, with some earning more than $40 per hour at their first job. This year’s program graduates have also accepted positions at local employers including Celanese, Giles County Public Service Authority, and Moog.

AdvanSix has a long history of hiring NRCC graduates and has now employed more than 80 of the instrumentation program’s graduates. Those graduates represent more than 700 years of dedicated service to AdvanSix, including Monty Hedge, a 1987 NRCC graduate. Hedge was on hand at the ceremony to welcome Napier and Lowe to AdvanSix. Originally from Dublin, Hedge serves AdvanSix as Electrical and Instrumentational Execution Leader. He found his first job at the company, and his career has now spanned 30 years at AdvanSix.

AdvanSix is a leading manufacturer of Nylon 6, a polymer resin which is a synthetic material used by their customers to produce engineered plastics, fibers, filaments and films that, in turn, are used in such end-products as automotive and electronic components, carpets, sports apparel, fishing nets and food and industrial packaging. As a result of our backward integration and the configuration of our manufacturing facilities, they also sell caprolactam, ammonium sulfate fertilizer, acetone and other intermediate chemicals, all of which are produced as part of their Nylon 6 integrated manufacturing chain.
