David Dunstan
Blacksburg High School has hired David Dunstan as its new head baseball coach. He comes to Blacksburg from Cave Spring High School where he previously was the head baseball coach for seven years and led his teams to six regional tournament appearances, two region championships and three consecutive state tournament appearances.
He was also named River Ridge District coach of the year three times and Region 3A West coach of the year twice.
Dunstan stepped away from Cave Spring to spend time with his family and is excited to come back to the diamond.
“I applied for the Blacksburg job because I love baseball and all the things that it can teach young adults. I know that this is a passionate fan base and I look forward getting our workouts going and getting everyone involved,” Dunstan said.
So far, according to Dunstan, he has received a lot of positive response from BHS officials and the community as a whole.
He plans to hold a team meeting in the next week to do formal introductions to the players.
Dunstan has been around the game as a player and coach since he was six years old, playing and graduating from Cave Spring High School.
His ultimate goal at Blacksburg is a state title, but he admits you have to be good and lucky to do that.
“I want our student athletes to be great men and role models in the community. I would like to, in the long run, build this program to the point where the guy that takes over after me simply has to reload and not rebuild,” Dunstan said.
Dunstan is a graduate of Radford University with degrees in communications, education and a master’s degree in school administration. He’ll teach history at Blacksburg High School.
