Rock and roll at the Skatepark Showdown with local band, Barren Minds in Christiansburg, Sept. 20

The Skatepark Showdown will be held on Friday, Sept. 20 (rain date Sept. 27) at the Christiansburg Skate Park (next to the CAC at 595 N. Franklin St) with local band Barren Minds. Registration starts at 6 p.m. and the contest starts at 7 p.m.

“The skatepark competition typically draws 30-40 participants, which I have thought was always really great. Many travel from other localities for our competition,” Director of Aquatics Terry Caldwell said. “It is always an awesome special event and everyone seems to enjoy it.”

The park itself will see 50-75 users on a nice weekend day and typically busier after school and into the evening, she said.

Local band Barren Minds, four Christiansburg High School musicians, will play.

“They are really great, singing old classic rock music and performing quality above most bands from this region, they have an awesome potential to “make it”, Caldwell said.

Maddie Townley, 16, the facility attendant who answered the phone at the CAC on Wednesday night, a musician herself and a friend of the band recommends the event even if you don’t skate.

“I absolutely do recommend the band,” she said. “One hundred percent. Come – if not for the skating, come for the band. The music is definitely worth it.”

The band, says Maddie is four guys, all 16-year-old juniors at Christiansburg High School.

“We’ve been friends since kindergarten,” she said. “They’re great.”

“It is so advantageous for our Town to be forward thinking when it comes to boarding,” Caldwell added, “Most communities are now realizing they have left that area of recreation behind, but, amazingly enough, it draws a crowd of all ages. We are listed as a park in VA under the Triangle Skateboard Alliance,” Caldwell said.

The $10 fee includes a T-shirt. For more information visit the CAC cacpool.com, or phone 540.381.7665.
