Blacksburg Library to host Chinese cultural exhibition

The Blacksburg Library will present an engaging afternoon of Chinese dance and movement Saturday, Oct. 12, from 2 – 3:30 p.m.

The library will welcome local Chinese dancing groups that will lead the audience on an exploration of the many different regions of China through dance and Tai-Chi demonstrations.

Dance in Chinese culture has many functions, including traditional performances, opera and ballet, and rituals and ceremonies. As early as 256 BC, dance existed in some form in China, representing a deep cultural and historical connection. It wasn’t, however, until the 1920s that dance was rejuvenated as an art form and traditional methods were consolidated into a method that could be taught.

Dancing is not only a joy for the dancers; it plays an important role in solidifying Chinese heritage.

Performers from the 15-50 Dance Group, Blacksburg Chinese School and the Chinese Senior Groups will perform traditional Chinese dances representing a portion of the over 56 recognized cultural groups in China. Also represented will be variations of Taiji, Yoyoing and music in what will be an educational and fun celebration of culture and diversity.

This performance is in support of New Virginians: 1619-2019 and Beyond, a traveling exhibit from the Library of Virginia, which the Blacksburg Library hosted in September.
