The Blacksburg Public Library will be hosting Indie Author Day on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Scheduled to appear as guest speakers are Dick Baynton, author of The Handbook of Small Business; Michael Abraham, author of several local fiction and non-fiction books; Ginger Dakin author of children’s book Tippy Toes Hot; and Debra Anderson, local freelance writer and poet.
The authors will describe their journeys through self-publishing, and the various paths they took to becoming published authors. Book sales and signings will be available at the end of the program, as well as an opportunity to bring any questions to the authors.
The local community is full of creative writing minds, and regional authors have produced books ranging in topics from business start-up guides to nationally acclaimed children’s books.
Indie Author Day will provide a wealth of information for any would-be writer who has been discouraged by the complexity of the process, the cost, the time commitment and other obstacles. “Indie Authors,” or “self-published writers” are non-traditional authors who have published their own books instead of submitting them to mainstream publication companies.
Now in its fourth year, Indie Author Day is a nationwide program that celebrates creativity and enables local authors to do what they do best: writing.
The Blacksburg Library will also be hosting an Indie Author Workshop on October 14th at 3:00 p.m. in preparation for Indie Author Day. The workshop will involve instructional videos and information.
Over the course of the day the program will highlight the many and varied online and local resources available at little or no cost to individuals seeking to publish. There will be videos that detail parts of the self-publishing experience and equip authors to try their hand at what is quickly becoming the most popular way to publish a book.
Any author with a rough draft, or a polished final can benefit from the workshop and the author day. The writers on hand will show you the way to see your books in bookstores and on library shelves. Information and handouts for local indie authors will be available.
Everyone is welcome to attend the Indie Author Day events. Drop in to hear your favorite author or to watch a how-to video.
