Virginia Tech to celebrate Homecoming Oct. 14-19

A full slate of exciting homecoming activities at Virginia Tech will be highlighted by the football game against North Carolina.

Virginia Tech will celebrate Homecoming Oct. 14-19 with a week of activities for students, alumni and friends. The busy week will include the homecoming parade, tailgating, a football game and various Sankofa events.

A Sankofa information session begins the week at noon on Monday, Oct. 14. The session will be held in Squires Booth B and will be available each day of homecoming week. Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana. The Sankofa symbolizes the Akan people’s quest for knowledge with the implication that the quest is based on critical examination and intelligent and patient investigation. The Sankofa bird has been adopted as a symbol of what Africana Studies strives to do.

Monday’s activities include a campfire kickoff from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Duckpond Amphitheater. Voting for the homecoming court also begins on Monday with voting at GobblerConnect. The busy day continues with a Sankofa cultural showcase at 7 p.m. at the Graduate Life Center Multipurpose Room.

A Homecoming’s Got Talent showcase will take place at the Haymarket Theater from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday. Camille Brown will present a Black liberation Talk at 6:30 at the Black Cultural Center.

Camille Brown returns to give a performance at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Moss Arts Center.  Presented by the Virginia Tech Union, Laugh Riot featuring Ron Fuches with Shapel Lacey offers up the fun Wednesday from 8-9:30 p.m. at the Squires Commonwealth Ballroom. Homecoming Board Moe’s Percentage Night is 5-9 p.m. Wednesday at Moe’s, 239 N. Main St.

The Black Student Alliance will present a homecoming concert Thursday from 8:30-10 p.m. at Burruss Auditorium. Featured performers are Megan Thee Stallion with Key Glock.

On Friday, the Old Guard 50th Reunion Pass in Review will happen at 3:45 p.m. on the drill field. At 5:30 p.m., the VT men’s soccer team will take on Notre Dame at 5:30 on Thompson Field. Admissionis free. At 6 p.m., the Tech volleyball team challenges the Fighting Irish in Cassell Coliseum. Again, admission is free. The homecoming Spirit Rally, sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, will fire everyone up from 7-9 p.m. on the Graduate Life Center Lawn. Sankofa’s Party Jam will take place from 9-2 a.m. at War Memorial Gym. Voting for the homecoming court will end at ll:45 p.m. Friday.

Taking place during the week is the Class of 1969’s 50th reunion and the Highty-Tighty Alumni Reunion.

The big events of Saturday, Oct. 19, kick off with the homecoming parade at 9 a.m. in downtown Blacksburg. Pregame HokieTalks began at 9:30 at the Holtzman Alumni Center, and The Virginia Tech Alumni Association will tailgate four hours before kickoff at Holtzman.

The big week concludes with an SGA maroon  effect at the Hokie-North Carolina football game at Lane Stadium.
