Despite Wednesday’s heavy rains, several districts held cross–country meets in our area.

Events included the Pioneer and the Mt. Empire districts.

Parry McCluer took seven of the top individual boys’ spots in the Pioneer District’s 5,000 meters, which paced the school to the team title. Dylan May was the Pioneer District champ, while Eastern Montgomery’s top finisher was Lance Elkins. Jace Fallon was 12th and Alec Elkins 14th.

Parry McCluer also claimed the top spot in the girls’ competition as Kensey May was the district champion, while Eastern Montgomery’s Annalyse McHone was second. Sarah Weatherspoon also gave the host-Mustangs an eighth place finish in the race held at Camp Alta Mons in Shawsville.

Auburn High School found lots of success in the Mt. Empire District meet. The Auburn boys outdistanced second–place George Wythe 27 to 45. Grayson County was third and Galax fourth.

Adam Downs claimed a district title in a time of 17:38.1. Auburn’s Andy Vaughn was fourth, Andrew Tickle was sixth with Mitchell Scaggs in tow. Auburn then claimed the 9-11 spots with Jacob Hurd, Chris Neal and Chase Guynn.

Auburn’s Anna Kuchan fell behind George Wythe’s Camryn Hardin and finished second in the girl’s 5,000 meters. Lilly Messner and Morgan Rosebaum would give Auburn a third and fifth place finish, while Lauren Connelly was 12th.

The Auburn girls finished second, only 10 points behind George Wythe. Galax was third in the girls’ competition.
