The career of one of the nation’s best wrestlers ever to sign with Virginia Tech could now be in question. Brandon Green from Paulsboro High School in New Jersey will undergo surgery to have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) installed.
Doctors said an MRI revealed Green had scar tissue around his heart. He had spent the past 11 days in the hospital after he was found unresponsive and requiring CPR.
Green was the defending New Jersey state champion at 170-pounds. His team was slated to compete for another state team title this past weekend.
It is too early to determine if he will resume his wrestling career and enroll at Tech.
Green, who was ranked as high as 116 in the nation by FloWrestling, first came to Blacksburg with his high school team four years ago.
At the time of his signing in November, Tech coach Tony Robie called him a very talented wrestler who did his best wrestling last season in his New Jersey state finals match. “He is still a little raw and has all kinds of upside,” Robie said.
He was part of the highest ranked recruiting class ever for Tech with six nationally ranked prospects. Green was undefeated in his final high school season.
