Doug Farmer changed his earthly home address on April 1 when he was called to Heaven.

Doug was a man of few words who enjoyed living a simple life. He was the son of Dwight and Jean Farmer and grew up with his brothers and sister in Fairlawn in Pulaski County. He graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1977.

He worked in the physical plant at Virginia Tech until his retirement in 2018. In his spare time, Doug loved to hunt in the mountains of Southwest Virginia and fish along the New River and on Craig’s Creek. He loved to watch old western movies and Virginia Tech Hokies in football and basketball. He was also a big NASCAR fan and loved to go to races when he could.

Doug was truly devoted to his mother. After the death of his father more than 30 years ago, he chose to live with his mother, taking care of her and helping her to live what she calls “a very good life.” His brothers and sister are greatly indebted to him for his devotion and care for her.

Doug was preceded in death by his father Dwight Farmer, who many knew fondly as “Cracker.” He is survived by his mother, Jean, his brothers Michael (Carol) of Virginia Beach; BeBop (Karen) of Shelton, Conn., Scott (Brenda) of Claytor Lake and sister Cindy Wood (Bill) of Greensboro, N.C.

He loved his many nephews and nieces and hearing stories of their accomplishments and their children. He was blessed with many friends over his lifetime, and his family is thankful for those who have reached out with great memories and stories.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, a celebration of life for Doug cannot be held at this time. Instead, to honor his memory, his family asks that you remember the good times you had with him and lift a toast in his honor as the memories will comfort us all.

Doug loved the dogs he had as companions in his life, and if you wish, you can make a donation to the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center (www.montgomerycountyva.gov/departments/acac ) or the charity of your choice in his honor.

Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
