Christiansburg police Sunday arrested Hokie football player Devon Hunter at his home and charged him with attempted strangulation of a family member, a felony, and misdemeanor assault against a family member.
Virginia Tech officials moved quickly and announced his indefinite suspension on Monday.
Associate Athletic Director Pete Morris said Hunter was not “upholding the high standards we have for our student-athletes.” He said he would not comment further until the matter is resolved.
Hunter played in all 13 games in 2019, starting two and making 16 tackles on the season.
The 6-0. 235-pound graduate of Indian River High in Chesapeake came to Blacksburg with a high ranking and was expected to start this fall at the rover position.
He was the 2017 class’s No. 1 safety (and No. 7 player overall) in the commonwealth, giving the Hokies their highest-ranked recruit ever. Hunter chose Virginia Tech over Florida, Auburn and North Carolina.
