On behalf of the Warm Hearth Foundation’s litter prevention program, Jody Smiley delivers food to residents in reusable shopping totes.

Keep Virginia Beautiful has awarded the Warm Hearth Foundation a $500 grant for its litter prevention project as part of the organization’s annual 30 in 30 green grants.

In addition to raising funds to support seniors in need of housing and health care, the foundation operates Micah’s Program, which assists seniors in need of basic necessities like shelf-stable groceries, prepared meals and personal care items.

As part of the foundation’s litter prevention program, food is delivered to residents in reusable, washing shopping bags. While Warm Hearth offers recycling options to residents, the reusable bags reduce waste from any paper or plastic bags that may be disposed.

Amy Slone, Warm Hearth’s associate director of development, said “Our organization is undoubtedly committed to environmental responsibility, but as a nonprofit it can often be expensive to sustain initiatives like these. Thanks to Keep Virginia Beautiful and others who offer similar funding, we are continuing to make strides tin reducing our environmental footprint and doing our part to reduce waste without taking funding away from other vital areas of support.”
