Downtown Blacksburg, Inc., (DBI) invites area families and their children to Downtown Trick or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021

The merchants of downtown Blacksburg, the Blacksburg Police Department, the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad and Blacksburg Parks and Rec Departments are ready to welcome families and their children to a safe and happy Halloween.

Once again this year, the Blacksburg Police Department will be promoting their two year round campaigns for the town: Blacksburg Be Safe (a K-12 initiative) and No Hokie Left Behind (college age initiative).

College Avenue will be closed from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. Blacksburg Police will host a booth on College Avenue to pass out candy and safety materials. Extra police officers will also be stationed downtown to assist in traffic calming and safe crossing. Barriers will be set up in parts of downtown to prevent people stepping off the sidewalk into traffic. Officers will assist with crossing Main Street at the Roanoke Street and College Avenue intersections.

DOWNTOWN TRICK OR TREAT EVENT SCHEDULE

4:00 to 6:00 p.m.: Trick or Treating at participating downtown businesses between Eheart Street and Faculty Street.

5:30 to 6:00 p.m.: Costume contest outside the Lyric Theatre with four age groups:  0-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. All contest participants will receive a Halloween goodie bag from Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. Prizes for group winners will be provided by downtown businesses. The contest will be held outdoors weather permitting and will be hosted by Joelle Schenk.

Fun activities throughout the downtown area from 4 to 6 p.m. will include games hosted by Blacksburg’s Parks and Recreation Department and candy and visits with the VT Rescue Squad.  At 2 p.m., the Lyric Theatre will host a special showing of Beetlejuice (Rated PG). Tickets are $5 and are available online at www.thelyric.com. Also, The Artful Lawyer/Creekmore Law Firm will host a free haunted house at 318 N. Main St., Blacksburg.
