Hokies finish 26th at women’s NCAA

The 2024 NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships have come to an end and the Hokies finished 26th overall with a score of 18 points. Representing Tech at the championships were Caroline Bentz, Chase Travis and Carmen Weiler Sastre. Emma Atkinson, Anna Summers and Emily Claesson also went as part of a relay team. 

The Hokies started the championships by scoring points in the 800 free relay. Atkinson, Bentz, Weiler Sastre and Claesson finished 14th overall with a time of 6:59.41. This time set a new school record and earned the team an All-America Honorable Mention. 

Bentz was a force in the pool the entire week. In the 200 back, she made the A final, placing seventh overall with a 1:52.39. Bentz earned All-America accolades for this swim. In the 50 free, Bentz finished 34th overall with a time of 22.12. Bentz placed 26th overall in the 100 back with a time of 51.96. 

Travis showed her speed in the distance races. She finished 35th overall in the 500 free with a time of 4:42.18. In the 1650 free, she finished 21st overall with a time of 16:03.93.
In the freestyle races, Weiler Sastre showed her strength. She finished 44th overall in the 50 free with a time of 22.32. She then competed in the 200 free and finished 21st overall with a time of 1:44.18. Weiler Sastre finished her individual competition with the 100 free. She finished 20th overall with a time of 47.87. 

Weiler Sastre, Bentz, Summers & Claesson swam the 200 free relay. They finished in 17th with a time of 1:28.12. 

The women finished the championship with the 400 free relay. Weiler Sastre, Bentz, Atkinson and Claesson finished 17th overall with a time of 3:13.30. During the relay, Weiler Sastre broke the school record for the 100 free with a time of 47.65.

The Tech men are traveling to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete in the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships Mar. 27-30.
