On Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023, Larry Darnelle Rollins (aka “Buzz”), age 67 of Radford, Va., transitioned to his final resting place.

Larry was born May 9, 1956 in Radford to Bobby “Pannie” Nelson Rollins and Archie Rollins, Jr.

Larry attended Radford High School, where he played football, and assisted the Bobcats in winning the State AAA Championships. During this time, he lovingly earned the nickname “Buzz.”

Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with his dog Sasha, but most of all, Larry loved his family. He always had a joke or comment to make us laugh.

He was last employed at Radford University.

Larry was preceded in death by his loving mother, Bobby (Pannie) Nelson Rollins Flynn of (Radford); stepfather, Roy Edward Flynn (Pulaski); maternal grandparents, William McKinley Nelson, and Annie Virginia Nelson (Radford);  paternal grandparents, Archie Rollins Sr. and Esther Lena (Casey) Rollins; and step grandmother, Isabelle Day Rollins (all of New River);  his grandson, Devin Hairston; and multiple aunts, uncles, and other relatives.

Larry leaves to cherish his memory and love, his wife, Brenda Porterfield Rollins, of Radford; his father, Archie Rollins, Jr. and stepmother, Cara Miata Rollins, both of Radford; his children, son, Lowell Jermaine (Jay) Walson of Radford and daughter, Tasha Akers, of Christiansburg; his sisters, Paula Rollins Moore (James) of Accokeek, Md., Tena Rollins Fisher, Anita Dawn Woodson (James), Rosalind Gale Nelson, all of Radford, Natalie Rollins Carter (Vincent) of Alexandria, Va., and Dana Austin of Charlotte, N.C.; his brothers, Bobby Nelson, Greg Rollins and Steve Rollins, all of Radford; and his special niece, Stacie Nelson of Radford; his grandchildren, Shauna Walson of Georgia, Shametrias (Anthony) Raymond of Missouri, Hanna Walson of Radford, Jeremiah Walson of Nevada, Danika Akers of Blacksburg and Corey Hairston of Montgomery, Va.; his nieces, Barbara Ruiz, Portsmouth, Va., Brittany Joyce Cleveland Smith, Staunton, Va., Jessica Astoy (Yusif) Alexandria, Va., Kayla Distefano (Rick) Springfield, Va., and Veronica Nelson, Radford; his nephews, Christopher C. Adams, Arenas, N.Y., Shawn A. Woodson, Florence, Ala., Justin Carter, Raleigh, N.C.; his aunts, Audrey Lee (Sherman), New River, Virginia Clark (Calvin) Upper Marlboro, Md., Connie Kincannon (John), Columbus, Ohio; and his beloved dog, Sasha.

He also leaves a host of great grandchildren, stepchildren, and other relatives; and his special friends, Georgina Walson, Cindy Akers Rollins, Charles (Chuckie) Day, David Stewart, David Morton, and Odell Palmer.

A graveside memorial service will be at the Sunrise Burial Park in Fairlawn on May 9, 2024, at 1 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the graveside memorial service will be held in Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum, 5555 Lee Highway, Dublin, VA 24084.

Following the memorial service a “Celebration of Life” will be at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, 100 Pulaski St., Radford.

The Rollins family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
