CHRISTIANSBURG – The MCPS School Board has adopted a division-wide student cell phone use policy, effective immediately.
The policy prohibits students from using cell phones during the school day without prior written permission from the school’s principal. Earbuds, smart watches, and other devices are included in this policy. The goal is to further promote a “conducive learning environment” throughout all MCPS buildings, according to MCPS.
“It’s important for our school division to take this step together to ensure we have the best learning environment possible for our students,” MCPS Superintendent Bernard F. Bragen, Jr. said. “We understand the need for connectivity in this day and age, but we are confident that eliminating distractions in our buildings will push students to be the best they can be.”
“I’m proud of our administration for developing this policy,” MCPS School Board Chair Linwood Hudson said. “I think it will make a significant, positive impact on our students’ daily lives. Cell phones are a constant distraction in our schools, we need our students to put them away and focus on learning and engaging with their peers. We also need a commitment from everyone involved: students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Together we can make this policy work and give the phones a rest.”
Students may bring their devices to school, but they must be turned off and out of sight during the school day. This includes school-sponsored events both on and off school grounds.
Exceptions will be made for medical reasons, IEP/504 Plan accommodations and legal compliance.
