Carter Walker Craigie, of Blacksburg, passed away Aug. 1, 2024, at age 86. He was born in Richmond to parents Walter Williams Craigie and Helen Walker Craigie. Carter was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School and Williams College. He earned a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976.
Despite life-long challenges with learning disabilities, Carter became a beloved educator. He taught fifth grade at Montgomery Country Day School in Wynnewood, Pa. For 25 years he taught at Cabrini College in Radnor, Pa., retiring in 1995 as professor of English and Communications.
An enthusiastic amateur radio operator, Carter served as an emergency preparedness volunteer communicator in both Pennsylvania and Virginia. Most recently he volunteered for the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Blacksburg.
In 1975, Carter married Kay Cothran Craigie, who is also an active amateur radio operator. He was predeceased by brother Walter Willson Craigie and sister Harriet Craigie van Houten, both of Richmond. He is survived by Kay, daughter Jenny Riffe (Greg), grandchildren James Riffe and Evelyn Riffe who were the light of his life, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was a member of Newport-Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests donations to the Giles County Christian Service Mission, 516 Wenonah Avenue, Pearisburg VA 24134.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Unity Christian Church of Radford on Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
The Craigie family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory.
