Marshall Neil Wirt, 83, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, at his home in Radford surrounded by his family.

Marshall lived his whole life in Radford, graduating from Radford High School where he was on the Bobcat football team. He retired from Lynchburg Foundry (Intermet) with 41 years of service and as a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Vietnam Era.

Marshall was a longtime member and leader at both Carter Street UMC and Bethel Methodist Church, where he was choir director and softball coach. He was an avid sports fan, playing and coaching in many sports, and VA Tech was a “must watch” in his home. He was also past president of the Kiwana’s Club in Fairlawn. He was always willing to give a helping hand, and he never met a stranger, putting you at ease with a smile and a laugh.

He was the son of the late Howard Charles Wirt and Mary Moss Wirt, and was also preceded in death by his siter, Mary Bob Spangler.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Janet McGhee Wirt; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Wirt and Gregory Wood of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and brother and sister-in-law, Guy H. and Judy Wirt of Salisbury, N.C. His life was further enriched by the presence of his nieces and nephews, other family members and special friends.

As per Marshall’s request, he was cremated and his family will receive friends from 4 until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Services will follow.

Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford is honored to be caring for the Wirt Family.
