Citizen addresses Christiansburg Town Council regarding speeding

CHRISTIANSBURG- Speeding on Alleghany Street in Christiansburg was the subject of a public address at the Tuesday, Oct.1 Christiansburg Town Council meeting.

Shelli Sayers, resident and parent, explained to the town council that she has spoken to Police Chief D. Chris Ramsey “quite a bit” about the speeding on Alleghany Street as other residents use Alleghany Street as a shortcut into other parts of Christiansburg.

“When we moved to Alleghany Street in 2016,” Sayers said, “there were about four children that lived on the street. Now, we have close to 12 to 14 [children] regularly walking, riding bikes, and also eight children in the morning and eight children in the afternoon. They’re getting on and off at the bus stop at Canaan and Alleghany. I know it’s been repeatedly brought to attention that Alleghany Street is a thoroughfare at this point. It’s a cut through street for most citizens, however the street is not big enough now to support the amount of traffic that is going through the community. We regularly see people running stop signs, particularly this morning, we had an incident where two folks ran the stop sign while children were at the stop sign waiting for the bus. It’s become quite dangerous. It feels very unsafe, for not just the citizens, but also for our children”

Sayers said that she, herself, is unsure of what the best possible solution for this problem is but would be willing to work with any officials that may be able to help with the issue.
