On September 24, Dr. Laura Sands, honorary president, welcomed the Virginia Tech Women’s Club to The Grove, the home of Dr. Tim Sands, VT President, and Dr. Laura Sands for the annual welcome reception.
Judy Trimble, president of VTWC, introduced the theme for this year: “Celebrating 60 Years of Friendship and Service.” VTWC was formed in 1965 and has evolved and grown to the success it is today.
Dr. Laura Sands graciously welcomed everyone and praised VTWC for their commitment to help women achieve their educational goals by providing scholarships for undergraduate women at VT. At the April luncheon, the club awarded $32,000 in scholarships to twelve VT women to enable them to further their educations. Ella Fitzgerald, a three-time winner of VTWC scholarships, told guests the story of how much the scholarships have helped her in school.
Judy Trimble presented a $60 donation to the scholarship committee to Janet Rakes, long time active member, to honor her decade of service.
Chef Mike, head chef at The Grove, prepared an array of delicious foods. Past presidents poured tea and lemonade for everyone. Guests were able to enjoy the lovely rooms of the first level of the home and listen to piano music played in the background.
Virginia Tech Women’s Club strives to expand the intellectual and social horizons of membership, provide scholarships to women at Virginia Tech, engage in service, and support the missions of Virginia Tech. Membership is open to all women who support the stated purpose of VTWC and who embrace the Club’s core values of friendship, education, scholarship, and service.
VTWC hosts Friday Forums throughout the year and invites interesting community members to lecture on topical issues and share their knowledge. The public is invited to attend.
VTWC has 17 interest groups which are an opportunity for women to meet in small groups and get to know each other. Service projects are conducted throughout the year and address food insecurity and needs of children. Travel and Tours plans bus trips to areas of interest. There are three luncheons during the year with a featured speaker. Each luncheon is an opportunity to get to know other members better, to raise money for scholarships, and to complete a service project.
Membership dues are $25.00 and help cover the operating expenses for the year.
