MONTGOMERY COUNTY- The MCPS School Board heard student representative reports for Eastern Montgomery High School and Christiansburg High School, as well as honored the students of the month.
The November 5, 2024 MCPS School Board meeting began with a positive start with reports from the MCPS School Board student representatives. From Christiansburg High School, Disha Talajia discussed CHS’s H.E.R.O. Awards which incentivize students to be present in school on time to help combat attendance rates. Talajia explained that H.E.R.O. is an acronym for “here every day, ready and on time.” These awards are presented every Friday and students may receive items from local businesses like Sandro’s to continue to encourage students to be present and on time. Talajia praised Christiansburg’s athletic successes and the success of their Trunk-or-Treat on Oct. 29, 2024 which, according to Talajia, had a total of 32 trunks organized by CHS students.
Aija McHone, Eastern Montgomery High School’s student representative, opened her report by discussing EMHS’s Homecoming events, saying that their Homecoming Dance was “Glow Crazy” where glow sticks and dancing were present as well as, as McHone stated, “fire music”. McHone also highlighted their Homecoming pep rally where student athletes were recognized for their efforts. McHone highlighted EMHS’s athletic teams’ successes and stated the EMHS’s cross country team has regionals at Blacksburg High school to see if they qualify for nationals. McHone also highlighted a program EMHS does on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays called “Mustang Time.”
“Through Mustang Time this week,” McHone said, “we collected cereal boxes for the Montgomery County Christmas Store. In all, we collected 178 cereal boxes for families in need and will follow our celebration of this with a discussion of ways to actively seek to help the community around us. Overall, Eastern Montgomery is happy to say that we are actively growing as a community and looking forward to what’s to come for the rest of the school year.”
