Members of Alleghany Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently honored Colonel Lewis Ingles “Bud” Jeffries with a Quilt of Valor Ceremony held at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum in Newbern.
Members of the Count Pulaski Chapter, NSDAR, were also represented at the ceremony, which was held to honor Jeffries for his service to our nation and his work to protect our freedoms. The Quilt of Valor was handmade by Karen Finch and Harriet Tuck.
“Bud” Jeffries, the fourth great-grandson of William and Mary Draper Ingles, grew up in Radford. He attended Virginia Tech, majoring in animal science. Jeffries left Radford for a career in the United States Army, serving 27 years, including a year and five days in Vietnam and rising to the rank of Colonel. Jeffries is the author of N&W Giants of Steam, considered to be the encyclopedia of Norfolk & Western Railway’s steam locomotive design, engineering and tractive power. Jeffries is also a longtime member of the Norfolk & Western Historical Society and the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.
A Quilt of Valor is made by volunteers and is a quality handmade quilt that can be quilted by hand or machine. The quilts are awarded to service members or veterans who have been touched by war to say thank you for their service and sacrifice for this country.
