At this point in time, the future of the dog park in Radford has yet to be determined. The site was completely underwater during October’s Hurricane Helene that forced the nearby New River over its banks.

Animals from the Radford Animal Shelter were moved to higher ground during October’s rising floodwaters from the nearby New River.

Now, city officials are moving quickly to get it back up and running.

The city’s director of communications Jenni Webb said the main building suffered water damage, many supplies and equipment were lost in the flood.

“All of the animals were adopted and fostered out to community members/volunteers. Many animals have since been adopted, are still in foster care and some are at other local shelters,” she said.

The original facility was opened in 1995 and will need a lot of work to reopen. Another building on the property is being renovated to become the offices/adoption and intake area. Webb said the city is still working on plans for the facility to be fully functional. No timeline has been set.

Meanwhile, the city continues to provide full animal control services.

*Animals are available for adoption currently, but the public is not allowed in the building,” Webb said. “We continue to provide support by caring for animals so that no animal control response is warranted.”
