CHRISTIANSBURG – Christiansburg Town Council unanimously agreed on a resolution during the Feb. 24 Christiansburg Town Council meeting in recognition of town employees for their quick response to an emergency.

Joe Oley, Ryan Hubble, Pete Haislip and Brandon Turner, along with Dr. Larry Cox who assisted the employees, took quick action in response to an individual suffering cardiac arrest at the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Center.

Barber read from the resolution that the individuals “involved in the situation went above and beyond their regular job duties and as a team worked together to administer CPR and AED to the patron…working diligently to save the individual’s life.”

Three of the town employees had completed CPR and AED training certifications within two weeks prior to the emergency event, Barber also said. Cox, a cardiologist, was at the recreation center merely by coincidence, allowing him to contribute to the lifesaving measures extended to the individual in need.

Honorable mentions were also expressed by the Mayor Mike Barber to Mattie Meadows, Rafael Rico and Shawn Stump, along with the Christiansburg EMS, Fire and Police who responded to the Jan. 31, 2025 incident.

Lewis Gale Hospital-Montgomery’s Chief Executive Officer, Lauren Dudley, joined the council in expressing thanks to those Town employees for their contributions in saving a person’s life.

“Saving lives and alleviating the pain and suffering of patients is a fundamental value of those of us in healthcare,” Dudley said. “During a cardiac event, every second counts. Without immediate treatment, a patient can face severe consequences including death or permanent damage. These individuals were clearly in the right place at the right time, and they acted swiftly to save a life.”

Dudley also thanked the Town of Christiansburg for providing their employees with CPR and AED training.
