Jeff Lazenby has joined the Town of Blacksburg as Chief Financial Officer/Director of Financial Services.

Lazenby comes to Blacksburg from the City of Marble Falls, Texas, where he held the position of Finance Director since 2021, following his service as Finance Director for the City of Blaine, Washington for 12 years.

Lazenby holds a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Vanguard University, and a master’s degree in public administration and finance from California State University, Fullerton. He also holds a master’s degree in governmental accounting from Rutgers University.

For 20 years, Lazenby has specialized in local government finance, preparing and monitoring governmental operating and capital budgets, managing annual financial reports and leading finance staff. He’s an astute leader in the areas of research, trend analysis, software implementation, risk management, intergovernmental relations, and contract compliance.

“I am honored to join the Town of Blacksburg and contribute to the Town’s mission,” said Lazenby. “I look forward to working alongside such a talented and dedicated team and bringing my experience in local government finance to help the Town achieve its strategic goals.

As the Chief Financial Officer/Director of Financial Services, Lazenby will be responsible for establishing and maintaining sound fiscal policies for the Town of Blacksburg; producing and monitoring the town’s Capital Improvement Plan and Annual Operating Budget; preparing the town’s Comprehensive Annual Finance Statement; managing the annual audit; cash management, investments, and debt management; providing financial advice to the Town Manager and Town Council; and leading the day-to-day operations of the Financial Services Department.

“We are excited to welcome Jeff to our team,” said Town Manager Marc Verniel.  “He brings with him a breadth of experience and demonstrated leadership ability in governmental finance that will allow the Town to continue the financial excellence it is known for.  Jeff will be a great fit for the Town organization and the Blacksburg community.”
