The Auburn High School baseball team moved to 8-0 on the season and picked up a key MED victory with a 6-1 win over Grayson County.
The Eagles got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on the strength of four singles and a fielder’s choice.
Auburn added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Colin Roark to score Josh Givens who led the inning off with a double. The fifth inning saw another Eagle run after a double by Zac McGlothlin was followed by a Blue Devil to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead after five.
McGlothlin was outstanding on the mound allowing two hits, one walk and striking out six in five innings of work.
Grayson took advantage of two Eagle errors to lead off the sixth to score their only run of the game and make it 4-1.
Alex Young and Jared Lavergne led off the sixth with back-to-back singles and later came around to score on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Matthew Altizer and McGlothlin. Lavergne, Givens and Graham Alley led the offense with two hits each for Auburn.
Blacksburg Girls Shut Out Botetourt

Blacksburg Boys Soccer Unbeaten
Blacksburg (4-0 record) defeated William Fleming (0-4 record), 4-1 last week. Pee Wee Distler scored two goals and Ethan Eschenmann had one goal for the Bruins to take a 3-0 halftime lead.
Soren Anderson scored the fourth Blacksburg goal and Karol Naredo Solabac scored on a penalty kick for the Colonels to round out the scoring.
Lady Bruins Down PH
Erin Bishop scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Blacksburg girls soccer team to a 4-1 win over Patrick Henry. Also scoring for Blacksburg was Elayna Weatherspoon and Piper Berger.
Blacksburg improved to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in the River Ridge District. Patrick Henry dropped to 1-3. 0-1.
Auburn Boys Shut Out Floyd
The Auburn boys’ soccer team shut out Floyd 2-0 this past week to move to 5-1-1 on the season. Junior Jared Bradley had a goal and an assist. Freshman Eli Olinger picked up the other goal. Goalkeeper Will Martin picked up the shutout.
Concord Wins Two
The Concord University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Davis & Elkins, 5-2 and 13-0, Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Anderson Field. CU improves to 20-12 overall and 11-3 in the MEC.
The only Concord hitter with multiple knocks in the game was senior utility and former Christiansburg standout MJ Hunter, who was 2-for-2 with a walk in the game. He drove in three runs.
The Concord University baseball team moved up a spot in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional Poll to ninth, the organization released Monday morning.
