The Blacksburg High School Girls defeated Salem High School 3-0 on a cold rainy night in Blacksburg.
Erin Bishop, Piper Berger and Bella Garza scored for the Bruins. Anna Dove collected four saves for the shutout win. Blacksburg improves to 7-0, 3-0 on the season as Salem drops to 3-2, 0-2 on the season.
Auburn downs Eastside After the long bus ride to Coeburn the Eagles were a little sluggish early but pulled away late for a 7-1 over the Eastside Spartans.
Mitchell Hale was the star on the mound providing 6 1/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing five hits, no walks and striking out one to pick up his first win of the season. The defense played well behind him as the infield racked up eight assists including an efficient 5-4-3 double play to end the fifth. Offensively Auburn was led by Jared Lavergne, Landen Marrs and Zac McGlothlin. Trailing 1-0 in the third, Marrs singled to left to score Lavergne and after advancing to second on a groundout, Marrs scored on a two out single by McGlothlin to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Auburn gained a little breathing room in the fifth on a Lavergne RBI double followed by a single and a WP to make it 4-1. Then with two outs, McGlothlin hit a bomb down the right field line for his second homerun of the season and a 5-1 lead. Graham Alley added another run with a 2 out single to score Josh Givens and make it 6-1.
Blacksburg boys also undefeated Blacksburg (6-0 record) defeated Salem (4-1 record), 3-1 in Salem.
Goal in the eighth minute for Blacksburg by Luca Ripepi on an assist by Craig Huxtable. Logan Lavinder scored the equalizer for Salem on a rebound of his own shot. Pee Wee Distler put Blacksburg ahead off the rebound of a Huxtable shot to give the Bruins a 2-1 halftime lead. Esteban Carvajal put Blacksburg ahead 3-1 with 12 minutes remaining on an assist by Keanan Kopp.
Ronald Cortez-Hernandez collected five saves for Salem, and Nathan Pratt had five saves for Blacksburg in goal.
Auburn win, tie at GW The Auburn girls’ soccer team picked up a 4-1 win in a late week contest against George Wythe in Mt. Empire District play. Freshman Caroline Fultz scored two goals in the win.
Sophomores Marley Thomas and Beverly Warner, each added a goal as Auburn moves to 5-3 on the season. GW dropped to 1-3-1.
The boys’ match ended in a 1-1 tie. Auburn’s first half goal was by Jared Bradley assisted by Cole Jones. George Wythe would rally off a corner kick with three minutes left in the match.

Auburn takes Christiansburg in five The Auburn softball team scored nine runs in the fourth inning, which helped them defeat Christiansburg 13-2 on Wednesday. Hope Wilson singled, scoring two runs, Leah Wimmer singled, scoring one run, Samantha Anderson drew a walk, scoring one run, McKenzie Booth singled, scoring two runs, Johnnie Gaynor doubled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, and Ariel Mullins grounded out, scoring one run.
Auburn opened the scoring in the second after Faith Wilson singled, scoring one run.
Auburn added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Wilson doubled down the left field line, Anderson singled to center field, and Christiansburg committed an error, each scoring one run.
Booth earned the win as she allowed five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out four and walking one. Sophia Russell took the loss for Christiansburg. The hurler went three and one-third innings, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits, striking out five and walking four.
Auburn piled up 11 hits in the game. Wilson drove the middle of the lineup, leading Auburn with three runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 2-for-4 on the day. Leadoff hitter Gaynor led the team with three hits in four at bats. Anderson collected two hits for Auburn Varsity Eagles in two at bats.
Reagan Smith drove the middle of the lineup, leading Christiansburg with two runs batted in. The catcher went 1-for-2 on the day. Makaylee Hughes, Alliyah Akers, Aubrey Davis, Smith, and Addison Reasor each collected one hit for Christiansburg.
