Anna Drew, seventh grade science teacher at Shawsville Middle School, was the sole Virginia recipient of the prestigious Milken Educator Award

MONTGOMERY CO. – The Montgomery County Public Schools Board recognized students, teachers, and staff during their regular meeting on May 6 for the 2024-2025 academic school year.

The student school board representatives were recognized by MCPS School Board members for their contributions and discussions with the board this academic year. These students are Mallory Akers from Auburn High School, Marina Li of Blacksburg High School, Christiansburg High School’s Disha Talajia, and Aija McHone from Eastern Montgomery High School.

“The participation of student school board representatives on the Montgomery County School Board is a vital part of giving voice to the students in our school system,” Board vice Chair Laura Purcell said.

The B. Milken Educator Awards, “created by Lowell Milken in 1987, have rewarded and inspired excellence in the world of education by honoring top educators around the country with $25,000 unrestricted awards,” according to www.milkeneducatorawards.org.

On May 6, school board members recognized the 2024 Montgomery County winner of this award, Anna Drew. A highly selective and prestigious award, Drew was selected as the only winner in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Drew is a seventh grade science teacher at Shawsville Middle School. Her contributions in the classroom to create fun and educational instruction as well as her leadership in community organizations and fundraisers are just some of the reasons she was a great choice for this award.

Additionally, Montgomery County Public Schools’ Seniors of the Month for May were also honored by the board members. Two seniors from April, who were unable to attend the meeting, were presented with their awards as well.

Jocelyn Blythe Lucas, May Senior of the Month, and Benjamin Parker Watson, April Senior of the Month were acknowledged by Principal David Hurd, Auburn High School.

Anthony Paul Du from Blacksburg High School was honored by Principal Chris Stewart.

Samuel “Sammy” Seife was recognized by Principal Shane Guynn, Christiansburg High School.

McKinzey Ann Starkey, May Senior of the Month and April’s Senior of the Month Talan Brinkman Bruce were acknowledged by Eastern Montgomery Assistant Principal Matthew McDaniel.

Human Resources Director Amanda Weidner announced the Staff Leaders of the Year awards to two MCPS employees. One operational employee and one teaching employee were selected for 2024-2025. Candidates for these awards are nominated by MCPS employees and then selectees are reviewed by a committee for final selection.

Dr. Megan Hawley is the MCPS Instructional Leader of the Year. “A dedicated educator with 17 years of service in MCPS, Dr. Hawley has held multiple roles, including elementary classroom teacher, assistant principal, and principal,” Wiedner said. “Her leadership is grounded in a people-first philosophy, prioritizing strong, positive relationships as the foundation of a successful school culture.”

The MCPS Operational Leader of the Year Award was presented to Dawn LaPuasa.

“Ms. LaPuasa currently serves as the supervisor of personnel for the school division. She brings 21 years of experience and deep institutional knowledge to her role,” Wiedner said. “Widely respected across the division, Ms. LaPuasa is known for her approachability, professionalism, and exceptional expertise in all areas of human resources.”
